navigating without instruments

the navigator’s star compass

The Pacific covers nearly half the planet, and Polynesian navigators settled almost all of it island by island, from the seas around New Guinea to Tonga and Samoa, then the Marquesas, Hawaiʻi, Rapa Nui and, at last, Aotearoa, with no metal, no compass and no written charts. To hold a course they divided the horizon into houses, not degrees: each house is the point where a known star rises or sets. When a guiding star climbed too high, the navigator took the next one rising from the same house, a star path memorized for every route.

When cloud hid the sky, the canoe itself became the instrument. An expert could feel four or five distinct swells crossing under the hulls, waves raised by winds thousands of miles away, and read them through the motion of the deck and of his own body. Islands bend those patterns: they return an echo and cast a shadow of calm that betray land still below the horizon. Terns and boobies fish up to 25 miles offshore and fly home at dusk; a single motionless cumulus marks an island beneath it. Together these signs held a course true to within three to five degrees.

The knowledge was guarded and passed on orally; training began on the beach, night after night under the sky, and becoming a navigator could take a decade. In 1769, Cook, equipped with compass, octant and chronometers, met Tupaia of Raiatea, who guided the Endeavour between islands with no instrument at all and, through hundreds of course changes, could always point exactly back to Tahiti. Two centuries later David Lewis sailed these techniques for the record, and wayfinding was finally recognized as one of the great feats of navigation: a science of observation and memory that vessels like Hōkūleʻa keep alive today.

Most decisions here were matters of restraint: a low-poly ocean instead of photoreal water, editorial typography over interface chrome, one warm accent color, and a day / night toggle that is not a theme but the subject itself: by day the sun and the swell steer the canoe, by night the star compass takes over.

Everything hand-tunable lives in one documented block: lights, wave shapes, camera orbits, hall layout, AR scale. The vessels are Draco-compressed GLB models, augmented reality runs on WebXR on Android and AR Quick Look on iOS, and there is no build step: the whole site ships as static files.
